Company Profile

Green Gas is an international clean energy and climate change mitigation company that specialises in converting harmful methane emissions from coal mines and landfill sites into clean energy and valuable carbon credits.

Founded in 2005, Green Gas has grown rapidly through natural growth and a series of mergers and acquisitions.

Green Gas has combined more than 50 years of international experience to enable it to provide world-class fully-integrated solutions for coal mine methane and landfill gas projects. Green Gas currently operates around 50 projects worldwide at combined electrical power capacity of around 110 MWel.

At the end of 2006, Green Gas acquired the core assets of G.A.S. Energietechnologie (G.A.S.) which is a leader in the construction and operation of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants to generate electricity and heat from low quality methane sources in coal mines and landfill sites.

At the same time, Green Gas acquired Hofstetter Umwelttechnik AG (Hofstetter) based in Switzerland.  Hofstetter is a global leader in gas collection systems and flaring technology. With over 30 years experience and over 1,500 plants installed worldwide, Hofstetter uses the latest incineration technology to ensure the safe and quiet flaring of gas.

Green Gas merged with OKD, DPB a.s in 2007 (renamed Green Gas DPB a.s.), based in the Czech Republic. Green Gas DPB is an established Czech pioneer in coal mine methane management and usage. It offers a surface and underground drilling capability as well as mine gas production and distribution. In addition, it distributes around 100 million m3 methane per annum from both abandoned and operating coal mines, for sale as a fuel and for the production of heat and electricity. The company conducts routine drilling for gas drainage, geothermal water, geological exploration and large diameter ventilation boreholes, supported by extensive laboratory facilities.

Green Gas sees climate change mitigation as an industrial challenge and brings a tradition of engineering and operational excellence to a business that is often not the main focus of the landfill and mine owner. By combining this expertise with our knowledge of the Kyoto Protocol and other renewable energy regimes, we deliver methane mitigation projects based on the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism  (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), to produce green energy tradable carbon credits.

Our team of international experts is drawn from a variety of backgrounds including mining, power, gas management, carbon credits and environmental protection.

Green Gas International B.V. is registered in the Netherlands, with subsidiaries in the UK; Germany; the Czech Republic; Switzerland, the USA and China.

Green Gas works closely with non-profit organisations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), to help reduce methane emissions from mining and landfill activities and enhance coal mine safety.
